Make Some Money while Going Green!

The most satisfying green way to get rid of stuff is to make money on it. So, the next time you're decluttering, don't just throw things away...think green and make some green!
Here are some ways you can make money from your discards:
-Quality clothes can go to consignment. Check locally for a consigment shop that takes mid-range clothes. It doesn't necessarily have to be designer. It depends on the shop-Collectibles do well on e-bay. -Toys, children's clothing, and knick knacks are yard sale best sellers. -For antiques, china, silver, or art, try an auction warehouse.
-craigslist.org is great for used furniture, electronics, sports equipment and pretty much anything else you can think of.
-And there's always a tax-deductible donation of goods to your local charity.

Where to Donate

If you have items you no longer need, please keep them out of the landfill. There are many resources available to donate items. The Salvation Army, Big Brother, Big Sister, and The Veterans will pick up items at your home. If you have items that may be difficult to donate, try craigslist.org, or freecycle.org to pass on others who will use it. For a list of suggested donation locations in your area, please email us at greenorganizing@gmail.com

Paper Recycling

Does your office have a paper recycling program? If not, it's easy to set one up. There are many recycling companies that will pick up barrels of paper for a small fee. In Massachusetts, I am a fan of Earthworm recycling. But, there are companies nationwide. All you need to do is make a phone call, order some plastic recycling bins (or put a sign on regular trash bins to designate them as paper only), and put them under everyone's desk. I first did this at a small company (40 employees) I worked for 10 years ago. A few people teased me, and my boss was reluctant, but I pushed for it and got the program going. The first month the recycling program sent me a report. We had saved 35 trees that month (that's almost one tree per person!). The company still uses the system today. In 10 years – that's over 4,200 trees saved! All I did was take initiative. You can, too!

What is Green Organizing?

Green Organizing is an environmentally-friendly approach to professional organizing, emphasizing the principles of "reduce, re-use, recycle". It encourages thinking about the social and environmental impact of your purchases, as well as the ethics of the companies you buy from.

Green Organizers promote:
Using recycled and/or biodegradable products where possible and feasible
Re-purposing and Re-using products rather than buying new products
Limiting the amount of unwanted items going to landfills by donating, free-cycling, selling, and recycling as much as possible
Purchasing organizing products from companies that adhere to environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices
